House Beautiful: What Every House Needs

Saturday morning ,while the house was still quiet, I got to sit with my coffee and my newest issue of House Beautiful magazine.

This is one of my favorite parts of the week…mom’s quiet time. I can usually get up before everyone else, have my coffee with my radio on- quietly sitting at the kitchen table and catching up on my magazines.

House Beautiful’s theme for the month is the topic “What every house needs.” There are so many opinions on the topic. This got me thinking…what a great blog post!

Me? You want to know what I need? WHIMSY. I love for my house to be elegant, yet cozy, and full of whimsical things that make myself and my visitors smile.

IMG_2312Take my star for instance… I love combining elegant oil paintings with rustic furniture and accessories. This barn-wood star had me at hello! Saw it at a local store, knew I had to have it, told my girlfriend all about it—and she ran out and bought it for me in exchange for a project I worked on for her. She totally surprised me! She’s awesome like that… Here’s a close-up shot.

I am also hung up on roosters. There came point where I had to put a moratorium on them. They are a bit plentiful here at my place. I have a rooster topiary…

IMG_2318

Whimsical rooster plates. Can you see them? They are perched on fancy chairs. Love them!

Cute huh?

I also found this copper-colored lamp at Hobby Lobby years ago on clearance for $11 dollars! How could I leave it there for someone else’s pleasure? No way! I am selfish, what can I say?

This is one of my many signs around the house. It is hard to read but it says: Quit your bellyaching. I could do an entire blog post on the signs in my house.

I have shown this one before, my little plastic tray that got a Misti treatment of spray paint and some writing.

This silverware artwork needs to be hung in a straight line. It kind of looks like a face… but I love the prints! I will be moving these.

In my bedroom/office I keep my inspiration board next to my desk. It was made from an old frame. I just removed the glass and and sprayed adhesive onto the cardboard then rolled a piece of cork over top. I have pretty magazine clippings, quotes I love, fabric swatches, notes of inspiration from clients, and Elvis.

He makes me smile! So do my kid’s shoes… cute huh?

And the last one is a bit cheesy and trendy, but I love it and want to go have my picture taken if front of it some day…

IMG_2327

Okay- I am throwing in ONE more… just to make YOU laugh.

I am one of those people that love “your mama” jokes!

What’s your opinion? What do you HAVE to have in your house? Tell me all about it!

Don't miss my Friday post! I am having an AMAZING guest blogger!

YEs, Misti, I must have a little whimsy in my decorating, too! You do have quite a sense of humor and it shows thru your decorating....I'm not sure mine shows thru as well. maybe I should fix that! I don't like things too symmetrical...need a little mix up! Loved this post!

Misti, I, too, love "yo mama" jokes. I gave my daughter a pillow that said "mirror mirror on the wall, I am my Mama after all." She loves to call me and tell me when she does something she use to make fun of me about.

WHIMSY then you would love my chandelier I have in my laundry room.
Hope you get to Paris on day. I've been went on the Eiffel Tower, pretty cool the people were mean to us but other than that it's a great place to see.

Love the barn wood star, I'm going to have too look for one of those. I also love the signs. I seen one in a friends house that said "Order your life, don't let it order you" I liked and have been thinking of making one. I made one sign that has our farm name on it and made it look all rustic. I get so many compliments on it. I'm enjoying your blogs.
