To Be or Not To Be...A Bench

A few weeks ago, I finally had a few minutes to stop into our newest Goodwill shop. So many times I wanted to go in, but didn't for one reason or another. Luckily, I picked a great day to stop by. There were so many great pieces of furniture that particular day, but this one really spoke to me. It is a twin headboard and footboard set, and was a steal at only $13 bucks! They told me that I had to take the rails and I really did not want them, but now I am so glad that I kept them. They are solid wood!

My first thought was a bench. Then, I thought, this could be two separate benches! My vision was a cream-colored bench upholstered with burlap and nailhead trim, then my vision went to black paint. I can't make up my mind! One bench or two, cream or black, to upholster or not to upholster...

This little beauty has great details! I love the circles, they remind me of a wedding ring quilt, and the very top arches inward, making it very unique. It does not have a maker's name on it, but it is very nice. Even the footboard has extra details that would really shine as a bench. If I choose to paint it cream with a glazed finish, the glaze would fall into the crevices and really make it look great. If I go with black the round metal accents would stand out even more. Decisions, decisions. The footboard could be used as the front of the bench or I could build it out with different legs and use the footboard for a smaller child-sized bench.

Tell me what you think- leave comments and give me your ideas for this piece, even if you don't see it as a bench. I had to have it, now just have to decide what to do with it. Oh, and I have to decide whether to keep it or sell it! Maybe I will put it up for sale, and if I have no takers then I can keep it! Sounds like a plan to me...

Comments please!

Thanks for your advice
~Misti

I love the bench idea, and I've been looking for a bench ;-) I vote for the cream color, with the footboard used as the front. Or maybe black, lol. OMG, it's hard to choose! OK, black. My vote is offically black. I'm a flip-flopper!

So fun...I love our Goodwill, too. Funny, I was just looking at Ballard Designs before I came to your blog and I totally see your vision!

I may vote for black, too. I love the circles, too. Good eye!

What great vision you have...I think cream with a glaze (don't want to waste those nooks and crannies). I love the burlap idea and I would defintely stick with the bench idea if that is what you first saw it as!

I think this would be great as a bench. I have the same problem deciding between cream and black when painting furniture. Can't wait to see what you do.

Misti, Thanks for stopping by. I have been neglecting my blog because my young son has been doing chemo but he is almost done so I will get back to it soon.

And, I don't mind telling you - the bed cost me $100 and I sold my old one for $250. I got my dream bed AND made money!

Love Layla's idea! that girl is so creative. I really love the bed you found & what a bargain. I never find anything neat like that at our thriftstores. I do better at yardsales. I actually like the bed just like it is, but if you decide to make a bench it will be gorgeous. I've done this before with a couple of old beds.

What a beautiful piece! I would have snapped it up too.

And I adore the idea of making it a bench. That detail work will look fantastic painted cream with a glaze. I can totally see it with burlap and nailhead trim.

Please, please do it! I want to see it!

Oh, that is so hard. I almost say cream w/glaze, but I love black too. And certainly burlap and nailheads. Everything about the piece is great. I love the circles too.

Layla's idea are great too.

Hi Misti...I found you from Layla's blog where she posted pics of my benches. I think you should paint yours black and upholster it with the burlap! I think it would look stunning! Stop on by my blog if you have any questions on how to construct it--it's really quite simple!
